The Coleus plant has been a popular herbal medication in India for over 3000 years. The Coleus plan is a perennial member of the mint family that is found in the lower elevations of India. It has now become a popular plant around the would as an ornamental plant.

The root of the plant is collected for its medicinal purposes. In ancient times the coleus root was used as a medical herb to treat heart and lung diseases, including intestinal spasms, insomnia, and convulsions. It is thought that the Forskolin which is a chemical in the plant is responsible for the medical qualities of the plant. Forskolin is said to activate the enzyme adenylate cyclase which initiates a large number of reactions and processes within in the cells of the body. Research on the herb has suggested that the chemicals within the plant may help with blood vessel dilation, inhibition of allergic reactions, and possibly cause an increased secretion of thyroid hormones. Forskolin has also been reported to inhibit the spread of cancer cells and inflammation. Some people suggest that the Coleus plan can also help reduce acne when applied in the form of a cream but there has been no research to support this. Several of the studies that followed the effects of coleus used injected forskolin so it is difficult to say whether taking this extract produce any beneficial reports.
